Following its decision earlier this year not to reappoint Susan Pascoe as the ACNC Commissioner, the Government has announced that Dr Gary Johns has been appointed to this position.
Dr Johns is a Director of the Australian Institute for Progress and an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology Business School.
He has served as a member of the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnership, and has wide-ranging experience in regulation, public service and policy, serving as an Associate Commissioner of the Productivity Commission. As federal member for Petrie from 1987 – 1996, he held a number of roles in the Keating Government, including Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer, Special Minister of State and Assistant Minister for Industrial Relations. Dr Johns is also a columnist for The Australian, and has authored a number of books on charities and the not-for-profit sector.
As with the decision not to re-appoint Susan Pascoe, the appointment of Dr Johns has received rather mixed comments within the NFP community. We anticipate changes and will keep you posted.
